Preventative Dentistry Pickering
It is always important to brush and floss your teeth following each meal. This will ensure that your teeth remain healthy, and it will protect your teeth and gums from disease. However, annual professional cleanings are prescribed by the Canadian Dental Association. They recommend that you receive two cleanings from a hygienest each year. The bright side is, nothing makes your mouth feel cleaner!
Complications in your mouth begin with plaque. Plaque is a sticky buildup that forms on your teeth. Plaque promotes bacteria, and over time it will harden into tartar. Tartar is much more difficult to remove, and brushing and flossing may be less effective against tartar once it has formed. Preventative dentistry focuses on the removal of tartar. Cleaning and polishing, as well as scaling, will be done to remove tartar that has already built up in your mouth. Flouride treatment is an additional measure, placing your rows of teeth into special molds or "baths." Flouride will strengthen your teeth against harmful aciids and sugars, and it is especially effective for our younger patients.
A final preventative measure that we take is an x-ray of your entire mouth. X-ray is crucial in preventative dentistry because it allows dentists to pinpoint and focus on any problematic areas or complications in your mouth. It can even detect oral cancers or the beginnings of gum disease. Early detection can lead to more effective treatments.
When your teeth have been given a thorough cleaning, we can then education yourself and your family on the proper methods of brushing and flossing. If you have questions about prevention, we can answer those as well.
